When I was still just a shorty my moms would never let me leave the stoop after dark. Once the orange lights started flickering no matter where I was I had to book it back to the safety of the building stoop. I'd sit next to my pops and admire the older kids that got to race bikes, play ball and swing in the park while I sat on stoop arrest. One early summer night some kids came over from across the way and set up across the street. They came about 5 deep, I remember they dropped cardboard on the pavement and started dancing next to what seemed like a massive box. I was witnessing my first Bboy cypher. I looked up at my pops and he could tell had to get a closer look. My pop dukes nodded and waved me off to go peep something completely new and inspiring. I'm not sure if this was the first time I got to leave the stoop after dark, but the way that I remember it is that I hopped off the stoop for Hip Hop. I had to be a part of what ever that circle was.
Today, on a daily basis, we have an entirely new generation of shorties hoppin off the stoop for Hip Hop. Shorties hop off for all types of reasons some reasons can be foul while other reasons are more righteous. The purity of the artistic expression is what keeps Hip Hop righteous. We look to the teachers to lead and entertain so that new generations of proud Mothers and Fathers can smile and nod their shorties off the stoop.
