The day I got my hands on Kanye's I'm Good mixtape was a game changer for me. I remember I was hanging out with my homie Steve back in the day. Steve had all the Chicago underground hip hop on lock. I think it was like 2003 or around there. He asked if I had heard this new mixtape from Kanye West. To tell you the truth I had no clue who Kanye was at the time. Steve said that this dude was the TRUTH and that he had been producing for Jay-Z and was planning on dropping this new album and so on. I was curious, but my expectations were not really that high. Then he hit play and Through The Wire started playing. Wow... This was different. A new sound from a new artist that actually worked and worked well. Keep in mind this was before Through The Wire had hit any type of airplay. Then the Jesus Walks snippet played and that shit blew my fucking mind. I was hooked. This was Kanye's first solo project to hit the streets in preparation for the College Dropout album. The whole tape is a mix of Kanye's verses over compilation of beats that he had done for other big name artists. It's always fun to remember the initial impact a legendary artist had on you the first time you heard their music. This project was my introduction to Kanye and I've been a huge fan ever since. I've posted a few of my favorite tracks from the tape. Enjoy!
